My latest win

So far I have won 8 different tournaments. There are plenty more tournaments that I haven't won but I think there will be more tournament wins in 2009 than last year.

Won this one but not sure what 'stratified' really means for this kind of format. Looks like a normal straight knock-out competition though.

Winning my five points tournament for the first time

This is the most nerve wrecking final I've ever been so far. I was 0-4 behind and my opponent needs only one more win to end the match and become the winner of the tournament. I managed to get a break in the fifth game and in subsequent game I duly issued a double and won to make the score at 3-4. The next game began like the last one where I again issued a double but in the beginning it doesn't look promising as shown here

and I knew when he got 6 and 1 that I have only one chance to turn this game around....

and I got it! Lucky number three!

and the rest was history as I managed to block his piece until it was too late for him to do anything else. 

When I looked back at all my previous rounds, I won 5-3 in the first round but was behind 3-4 in the second round before finally won it with a 5-4 scoreline. The next three rounds were quite comfortable wins as I won 5-3 in the third round, 5-2 in the fourth round and 5-3 again in the fifth round. But the final round is definitely worth fighting for.

Third time lucky

After losing to him twice (24-25 and 23-25) I finally managed to beat Steve Kong and it was a close one. At one time I was leading 23-16 and yet he managed to tie the game at 24-24. Now I know his feeling during our second match when he was leading 21-14 and narrowly wins at 25-23. But in our first match, I was leading 23-11 and he still win. So I'm going to invite him for our next match as there is still some scores to settle. :)

My Fifth Tournament Wins

So far I have won Zippy Oner, One Pointer, Three Pointer and Tortoise Threers tournaments. Now to focus on Nack and five pointers tournaments.

My fourth backgammon win

Today I won my fourth backgammon tournament. The last time I won was on the 13th January so it was quite a while ago. I'm in another final at the moment, in a Nack tournament. Should be nice if I could win that too!

My backgammon statistics

I came accross one of the discussions in the dailygammon.com forum talking about player's statistics so I asked one of them if he could make one for me. He kindly produced one for me and there are lots of interesting fact. For instance when I compare my win rate for the past 30 days against all matches, it shows an improvement from 47.89% to 57.14%. And my chances of winning a one, three and five pointer match is about 50% (just like flipping a coin, eh). And I am definitely going to win the 7 rounds tournament IF I can reach the final round. Unbelievable!

I was leading 23-11 in this match against Steve Kong and yet he managed to take a lead 24-23 after 8 games before I managed to get even. And then he took the final game which seals the match. I've already challenging him for a second 25 pointer match.

I'm also in the middle of 25 pointer match against Idlan. I was trailing 11-21 before managed to get a lead of 24-23 after 7 games. Does that means that she will win the next game and I win the final game and thus the match? Hmmm.. I wonder. Such a luck of dice.

Dailygammon one to one standings

I have been playing backgammon among my friends for quite some time now. The most regular opponent is Idlan who is in Colchester now, but since she lost her password, we are stuck at the 12th game where I am leading 24 to 23 (so close!). I am also dueling with two PhD students here in Lancaster, Kevin Martin (who teaches me how to play backgammon and who still consistently beaten me online although I have won against him three times in a row during our Monday session) and Steve Kong. I am also dueling (or shall I say trashing, hehe) Jun who is currently in Malaysia. You can see all the results here.

One more win from Three Pointers Tournament and I will take a break. Seriously :)

My second backgammon tournament win

Today I won my second backgammon tournament, another one pointer match. I'm quite pleased with this win. Next target is to win 3-points match tournament. I wonder how long it will take. Hopefully not as long as it took me to win my first tournament (9 months!).

I joined http://www.dailygammon.com/ on the 20th February 2007. After 9 months and 3 days and 792 finished matches(368 wins, 424 losses) I finally won my first tournament. What a relief, I thought this day will never come!

Yes! After seven consecutive weeks of losing to Kevin, I've finally managed to beat him 9-4 in our weekly backgammon duel. I was trailing 1-4 and the thought of not winning for the full two months started to form in my mind. But then I realised that I had nothing to lose and started to play aggresively. Whenever my pieces look promising, I immediately offered a double cube. Sometimes he declined it and sometimes he accepted the offer. And lady luck was on my side as I was finally in front at 6-4. I tried to put more pressure on him by offering a double cube again in the next game. He accepted it and after few moves decided to offer back the double cube to me. The positioning of my pieces doesn't look good but it was too early to tell.

So I've been thinking, either let him win this game and tied the score at 6-6 or I can just finish off the match altogether. And maybe I was crazy in accepting back the cube but when I rolled double sixes at the last moment, it was such a sweet victory. I am going to cherish this moment, at least until I meet him again next week.

Backgammon

I have been smiling since yesterday. And the reason is... I won my first ever backgammon match with Kevin, my ex-officemate. Considering the fact that I've just learned how to play this game (from Kevin nevertheless) about two weeks ago, and Kevin used to play regularly in real tournaments, it was indeed a sweet victory.

We played a 9 point match. I was leading 2-1 when I offered a double cube to him. After several turns he offered to double it again. I couldn't resist the temptation and accepted the double. And with a stroke of luck (I managed to get a crucial double sixes) I won that game and was leading 6-1. He managed to win the next game and gammoned me on the next game with a double cube on board, so the score was tied at 6-6. I won the next game and the score stands at 7-6. When we play the subsequent game, he offered a double cube to me. This is my chance, I think, to win the match but it is not without a risk. I took the risk and the game continues. As luck would have it, I managed to put his pieces on the bar whilst succeeding in getting a six to steer my own piece away from his area. And the final score is 9-6.
